Ice
Planet 9000: Crafting Cinematic Cosmic Journeys
Formed in 2018, Ice Planet 9000 is the brainchild of Brent Zius and Karl
Learmont. Their music defies genre boundaries, blending elements of “Active
Ambient” and the iconic “Berlin School.” Inspired by
70s sci-fi classics and legendary artists like Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis,
and Tangerine Dream, Ice Planet 9000 weaves intricate sonic landscapes
using a mix of modern and vintage synthesizers, along with custom-built
musical instruments.
Albums and Artistry
Their first two self-released albums were successfully crowd funded thanks
to a strong, loyal fanbase. These albums are supported by a rich concept
and storyline.
“Sequence
1: Glass Jar” (Feb 2022)
This debut album features six 70s synth-inspired instrumentals that serve
as the soundtrack to a futuristic universe. Imagine massive deep space
tankers—aptly named “Glass Jars”—mining water
and transporting it back to distant colonies. The vinyl release boasts
stunning 3 gatefold art on both sides, complete with snap-together pieces
representing crew members, the enigmatic Sonic Lathe, and alien artifacts.
The inside album cover doubles as a backdrop for creating your own cosmic
scenes.
“Sequence
2: Star Chamber” (March 2024)
Their second album takes listeners on an 80-minute cosmic odyssey. With
11 tracks, Ice Planet 9000 continues to explore celestial realms. The
hand-painted sci-fi artwork gracing the CD, USB, and digital versions
adds to the immersive experience. There was even a Deluxe Boxed edition—resembling
pieces of an exploded spaceship! The tri-fold panorama artwork and accompanying
booklet provide insight into the album’s captivating storyline.
Merchandising …and Sci-Fi!
Ice Planet 9000’s merch is also otherworldly. Brent worked as merch
distributor and manufacturer for bands such as KMFDM, Lords of Acid and
many other Wax Trax bands.
Karl’s band Angelspit has earned a reputation for pushing boundaries
with fun and inventive merchandizing. This results in merch which re-ignites
the imagination of a generation bought up on sci-fi!
In a short time, Ice Planet 9000 has been featured on Ambient music Podcast
and radio all over the world. They have been played on WDIY / WMUH Soundscapes
(Galactic Travels), Black Night Meditation Podcast, Dog Germs Radio, Sequences
Magazine, Tones & Drones, Convergence Zone, Schrodingers Rat, Hypnagogue
Podcast and many others.
Visual and Transformative
Ice Planet 9000’s music transcends mere sound; it’s rich,
complex, and profoundly visual. They have created several music videos
based on hand painted content - not AI generated (View their YouTube
here). Each track invites listeners to embark on transformational
voyages through the cosmos.
“Sequence
3: <Title TBA>” (Due Spring 2025)
Ice Planet 9000 are currently working on their third album – focusing
on long form ambient pieces inspired by Nebula and the eternal sound of
super nova remnants. All tracks are recorded live using Blaster Beam (a
six foot instrument with 11 piano wires tuned to the low threshold of
human hearing), Moog One, vintage samplers and modular synthesizers.
