Alan D.D. from Tintanocturna Reviews Puncture Marks, by Angelspit
“An incredible variety of styles, ideas and genres”
It always surprises me what people can come up with when they have the chance to reinvent anything, even more if it’s music we’re speaking about. When Karl Learmont a.k.a. Zoog Von Rock started promoting “Puncture Marks” saying his tracks were “being attacked, ripped to shreds and spat back out” he wasn’t joking at all!
After the release of Black Dog Bite, Zoog decided to see how the album would sound when its songs were altered by some of the best exponents in the alternative music scene, turning them into different genres that include, but are not limited to, IDM, Industrial, Darkwave, Synthwave and Cyberwave, just to name a few.
Despite it had its pros and cons, some tracks with a better sound and idea behind them, there are certain remixes that got me completely addicted to them. I couldn’t stop playing some of them, and I know that will be the case for everyone who gives this album a try. There is something for everyone, a different rhythm and genre in each of the songs.
Mr. Kitty offers one of the most entertaining tracks with his remix of “Satanic Aesthetic,” presenting a version more oriented towards the Dance genre, and even funny, uplifting song to listen to. I always feel an inner party in my head whit it!
“An incredible variety of styles, ideas and genres that left me open-mouthed.”
The violence and energy of En Esch on the remix for “Ugly Deeds” creates an interesting contrast when compared to the rest of the setlist, standing on its own highlight and glory, although it would take a couple of attempts to find the beauty on it; such was my case, but as soon as you start liking it, you will put it in replay! This same applies to The Mercy Cage remix of “Sexy Tragic Muse.”
There are also tracks that didn’t surprise me that much, such as the Mutilato Remix of “Great Bank in the Sky” by Go Fight or the “Bang Bang Bang” in charge of INERTIA Pistol Whipped. There was a good idea, an interesting approach both of them that seemed to have potential, but that didn’t convince me in the end.
It is also worth of mention that “Post Truth Wonderland” is destroyed by Shadowcell Theory to create a macabre, psychotic rhythm filled with energy that competes with the second version, a cover of the same song by steampunk band Abney Park, my personal favorite because of its trance rock, HIM-inspired sound. This is followed by the Planetdamage Wreck Remix of Scorpio Machine, a delight of track!
Returning to the simple, yet curious electronic sound, listeners will find a remix of “Collapsing Venus” by Aberrant Behavior. I’ not too fond into cyberpunk, but it is as solid as any other of the mentioned good tracks and should be appealing to followers of the style, which I’m just not a fan of.
This release proved to be one surprise after the other with an incredible variety of styles, ideas and genres that left me open-mouthed. Puncture Marks is a curious record, to say the least, and that’s what I love, to see creativity explode and give this kind of results.
