Making Music More Morbid…
I got this email from Connor. He bought up something that I’m always struggling with…so I though I’d share it..
Hey, I saw your videos on making music. I’ve finished my first album and after listening to it I realize that I need to break out of my minimalist state, the problem is when I go to make music I’ll have an idea down on paper and I’ll tell myself that I want it to sound scary or I want it to sound like an epic symphony (I do instrumental music), but when it comes time to start pressing keys… I get nothing. Do you have any tips for starting out instrumental bits?
Hey Connor,
I feel your pain!
This is the exact reason we go through (at least) 20 drafts of a song before we release it. It’s difficult because what sounds good in your head does not necessarily sound good through the speakers.
Once you’ve written the idea down, it’s important to make sure the song is strong and works. Be critical, but not over critical. It’s a great sign if you can remember the tune the next day.
If you’re into writing scary music, i suggest you listen to the sound track an sound design of horror movies - I’m serious, there’s some really cool stuff going on in there.
The chords need to make your skin crawl…but they don’t need to be loud and obvious. The greatest skill to master is dynamics…do more with less!
Also add recorded material to your music. Pluck strings, record the ambiance of outside your window and wind it backwards. Get experimental. foreign sounds invoke foreign feelings.
You need to focus and shape the music until your happy with it. Remember that you are sculpting emotion - and sculpture is a long process.
I hope this helps.
I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on this!
ROCK!

DAY 25 : Pomona, CA
Woke up in Pomona. It was rather fucking hot. There’s an awesome synth shop around the corner from the venue called Noise Bug. We picked up a few new Doepfer modular synth parts…YEAY FOR SHOPPING!!
Got the Joystick, Bucket Delay (finally), a slew Limiter for the Vocoder and another filter.
We had to swap tour buses because our old bus (named “ZEUS”) broke…not sure how…it just broke.
We hauled all our shit from Zuis onto the new bus…the new bus was a mess because CREED were the last tour on it….and they trashed it.
…so we all spend several hours un-trashing it.
it’s 4 hours to show time, and we’re all scrubbing a bus in the heat…FUCK YOU CREED.
We got to the venue and were greeted by hostility…I think the venue manager had a small penis and wanted everyone to know it.
The useless fuck who was doing our monitors did not give a shit and disappeared for several songs WHILE WE WERE PLAYING. The venue’s lighting guy did not even turn up.
…so after spending several hours on our hands and knees cleaning a rock bus, we had to put on a show in 35degree heat with a venue who didn’t give shit.
We gave it everything. The audience were awesome.
Doc (our sound guy) once again pulled a miracle and gave AWESOME sound. KMFDM utterly ROCKED.
Met heaps of cool people - there were some really awesome and enthusiastic people there.
DAY 24: Los Angeles, CA
We pulled into a carpark in the middle of LA. It was a massive roof-top car park. It was connected to the Nokia building where they do the Academy Awards. The was over the read from the stadium where they had Micheal Jackson’s memorial. There was a wall with a huge poster advertising the movie. It had become a memorial where people were leaving their respects. Thousands upon thousands of signatures and notes. It was awesome. I added my positive thouths to the wall.
The venue was beautiful. The backstage was massive. The bar prices were ridiculous. The audience were…well…most showed their appreciation by smiling politely or not leaving.
Some were not afraid to go rock out, but I got the feeling that it’s uncool to show enthusiasm in LA.
We only met a few people. No one else could be fucked saying hi. I can understand why Rage Against The Machine were so angry. I understand why they kept screaming WAKE UP.
whatever.
We met some old internet friends and made a heap of new ones. There were some really cool people there (who weren’t afraid to have fun). After the gig we went to a 24 hour dinner and ate greasy awesome.
Thanks for the Stroh Garith!! Thanks for the painting Ian!
DAY 23 : San Francisco, CA
Frisco is a beautiful city. It’s sooo coool. It’s like a giant Newtown (coolest suburb in Sydney). The venue was amazing, it was a huge old theatre with marble floors and detained ceilings.
On our arrival, we teamed up with Jules, Andy and Steve from KMFDM and hunted down some Vietnamese Pho.
IT ROCKED.
Due to the venue’s age, there was no air-con. It was hot. It was really hot. We were wearing latex and PVC. We were sweating heavily before we got onstage.
We walked on stage. It was boiling. We ROCKED. The audience were boiling, so they couldn’t dance or get into it.
It was a hard gig, but we rocked it and the audience rocked. We met a heap of great people. It was hot sweaty fun in Frisco.
Sunshine
Moonlight
Good Times
Boogie!
DAY 22 : Portland, OR
Portland is a cool city. It’s got vibe. The venue looked like a converted basketball court but it ROCKED.
It was a straight up gig - great sound, awesome audience - a lot of fun!!
We’re enjoying meeting people after the show, and the audience in Portland were great.
It was such a low maintenance gig…which unfortunately makes for a boring blog entry…
DAY 21 : DAY OFF (Seattle Pt#2)
Today is AWESOME! The weather is a little cool but AWESOME.
We headed for the markets by the peir. We find a chocolate shop that makes THE BEST cholocate. Ate, then ate more, then some more. Jumped on the monorail to visit the ROCK/SCI-FI museam. AWESOME. watched video interviews from Henry Rollins (I want his babies) and several other awesome humans and heard some really inspiring views on PUNK. Also looked at a zillion bazzar electric guitars, examined fragments from Jimi Hendrix’s smashed guitars…IT WAS ROCK!
Then entered the Sci-Fi museum and checked out the collection of weaponary from Klingon, Stormtrooper and Freeman (Dune) worriors.
AWESOME!
We went up the Space Needle tower…and were greated by ANOTHER fucking STARFUCKS…
ROCK!
DAY 20 : Seattle, WA
We got up early (why god why??). Had managed to find a coffee that was not Star-FUCKING-Bucks.
StarFucks is drab, but at least it’s not funded by a right wing christian cult.
FUCK YOU HILLSONG!
…anyway, we loaded into the venue around noon, met our new co-support band “The Legion Within”. They ROCK!
The venue was called The Moore and was a beautiful old theatre over 100 years old. It had seats (which was kinda weird), but we rocked it!
Finally got to meet Tess and B, plus many other awesome people.
After he bump out we went to the after party…and i got rather pissed. Then we all went back to a motel room and partied until 4am. There was a TV in the room but no swimming pool…so we could not live out the particular rock cliche.
