Angelspit’s new remix CD “Larva Pupa Tank Coffin” mutilates the darker side of Electro with 4 new tracks and 7 remixes (3 by Angelspit) giving a deadly 11 track remix CD.

Angelspit has once again produced stunning and elaborate artwork with help of Australia’s leading fashion photography crew (Photography: Helen White, Makeup: Karen Hopwood, Hair: Lyndall Vile & Lynn Nguyen, Photo shoot Assistance: Warren Beaton, Clare Beaton, Garrick Charter, Brad Wylie, Hugh Burley,Tama & Sasha (Outsight). Shot at the massive Studio Kite in Sydney Australia.

The remix CD will also be accompanied by a new video for the track “Sleep Now” by Thomas Marcusson, Stephanie Rajalingam and Ole Magnus Saxegard.

Remixers include Australia’s veteran Electro-Industrial master Dave Foreman (Tankt), US/European Electro wizard Mark Knight (Cage 23), and Koe Soleil’s mix of Harsh Euro-Electro and Visual Kei (Noir du’Solei). Combined with Angelspit’s self-massacred remixes, “Larva Pupa Tank Coffin” is guaranteed to make you bleed.

The four new Angelspit tracks include:

“Twenty6Hundred” is a fast and furious vixen driven track with a hard hitting dirty edge. This track was recorded with a 70s punk approach, in which Destroyx’s vocals were recorded on the first raw take without rehearsing, while Angelspit’s huge Doepfer Modular Synthesizer was improvised live.

“Not born, Hatched” is a disturbing instrumental that drags you through an 80s sci-fi noir with a v8 driven intensity. It features a chaotic solo by Zoog, where he plays an electronic musical instrument designed specifically for this track by Zoog and Steve “Agent 13″ Jones (Australia’s Synth and Electronics master).

“Hell was made Flesh” is an exercise in self reflection and slow annihilation. The track features several large scale acoustic instruments built by Angelspit to create a uniquely haunting atmosphere.

“Massive” is a completely new style from Angelspit - blip-pop meets pixilated vocoder funk with frantic beats, fat gameboy sounds and all the psycho-brat energy typical of Angelspit. This track was recorded naked.

Track list:
01. Sleep Now (Angelspit Remix)
02. Fink (Noir du’Soleil Remix)
03. Twenty6hundred (Unreleased Angelspit track)
04. Ditch the Rest (Angelspit Remix)

Getting the spark back

I got an email from Nik Fig:
Just asking; What can I do to get that.. well.. ‘Spark’ back? I want to do music. I have the time. Yet there seems to be a lack of will and a thought in the back of my head that screams I’ll never be as good as I used to (in my opinion, of course). Let alone I don’t remember how to use Protools anymore/all technical processes are beyond me now.
This is a great question. I’ve lost my spark and have gone for over 12 months without making music. It was a hellish time.

Here’s some thoughts on getting the spark back…but first, you need to utilise the smallest room in the house (the toilet)…
To do this, you must put a magazine rack in your bathroom and fill it with inspiring stuff…

1) Revisit your favourite era
My favourite time for synths and music was 1976-1984. Massive polysynths, awesome monos…it was perfect before the DX7 fucked everything up.
Fill your magazine rack with music technology magazines from your golden era (like Keyboard magazine). Flip through this synthporn when you’re squeezing the goodness from your colon.
Seeing all this synthporn will help kick-start your ROCK engine.

2) Read manuals of the synths you already own.
Add a few manuals of gear you already own to the toilet magazine rack. Reading about the gear you already own can re-ignite interest in your gear and thus your music. I find reading my old EMAX manual gets me excited about delving back into it and using it again.

3) Get Disciplined. Get a ritual.
Set aside a time each week when you make music. Pick a dedicated time…eg Tuesday night.
When you come home from work get take-out, turn off your phone, DO NOT GO ONLINE. From 6pm to midnight on Tuesday nights YOU WILL MAKE MUSIC. You must not break this date under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. If you get tired during your 6 hour block, go for a walk, do exercise, have a shower, make a coffee - DO NOT GO ONLINE.
If you stick to this ritual you will have completed a track after 2 months and a mini-album after 12 months.

As far as my workload goes, I’m currently in “downtime” so I only work on music two 8 hour days per week. When we’re coming into a release I’ll work five 12 hour days per week. My ritual goes like this:

as far as your concerns with “I’ll never be as good as I used to”, I still haven’t figured out how to deal with that one…!

hope this helps!

ROCK!

Which Analogue??

I got an email from Garrick - who is an amazing young producer from Sydney.

From Garrick:
I’d like to get some analogue in the studio.. I’m of three minds:
1) Doepfer dark energy
2) Moog little phatty
3) Piece of grimey vintage
Would you seriously recommend the dark energy? Any problems with it, limitations?

Pete from Shiv-r (http://www.shiv-r.com/) has a Little Phatty and LOVES it - he gets some wicked stuff out of it. The Little Phatty II looks even more impressive - I’m reading some amazing things about it. The manual looks really awesome:
http://www.moogmusic.com/manuals/LPOS20_Addendum.pdf

Personally, I LOVE the Dark Energy. It’s currently at the core of everything we’re doing. It’s oscillator is solid and hardly drifts. The Dark Energy is cheaper, but it’s only single oscillator. The filter is really nice, but it’s not a Moog…and there’s no filters like Moog filters (except maybe Synthesizers.com or Doepfer A-102)
…but with a little tweaking you can make the Dark Energy’s filter THUMP! It sounds like a Prophet5.

The MIDI spec on the Dark Energy is great. It also comes with USB. It converts MIDI to GATE, Pitch CV, Pitch Bend CV, Velocity CV and an extra controller -> CV4. I can patch out of it and drive a MASSIVE patch using heaps of other modules with it.
One bummer is that it does not have Portamento, but the Pitch Bend -> CV is very handy an can get around this.

The Dark Energy is VERY compact, and you can do so much with it. I’m of the impression that the Dark Energy’s MIDI spec and CV input/output is better than the Little Phatty….probably because the Dark Energy is designed as a semi-modular as opposed to a standard analogue synth.
Doepfer are building an add-on for the Dark energy with a extra oscillator and other stuff. They will be announcing more about this soon.

Getting an vintage synth would be awesome, but a decent one is really expensive! Personally i don’t think you can’t beat an SH-101,  Moog Rogue/Mini, SH-2, MS-10 or MS-20. Currently MS20s are sitting around $1200 - $1600. For the same amount as a Little Phatty II (US$1400) or MS20 you could get a DEADLY little modular set up. It could consist of:

Doepfer Dark Energy US$625
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/darkenergy/

Doepfer mini power unit and case $120
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/minicase/

extra oscillator (A110) $200
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a110/
or
Analogue Solutions VCO-SUB $140
http://www.analoguehaven.com/analoguesolutions/modules/
(very good Oscillator, but not as flexible as the A-110)

Doepfer Sub oscillator (a-115) $80
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a115/

Doepfer Mixer (A-138) $80
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a138a/

extra filter (i HIGHLY recommend the Doepfer A-102) $115
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a102/

extra VCA (Doepfer A-132) $80
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a132/

Doepfer Multiples (A-180) $45
http://www.analoguehaven.com/doepfer/a180/
Alternatively just make them yourself for $10

TOTAL = $1345
You could declare WAR with this modular.
Also check Schneiders Buero (Berlin) for prices:
http://www.schneidersbuero.de/

The most important thing to remember is that the gear does not matter. The ideas are the most important thing! Buying gear will NOT enable you to make an awesome track!

Aggro-Electro Boom

Just got my hands on a little piece of eROCK called Aggro-Electro Boom:
http://www.sonivoxmi.com/ProductDetail.asp?Item=CDPlayaAggro

It’s a simple little softsynth drum thingy that’s got several hundred SLAMMING sounds on it. The sounds are rather fat and dirty, so they’re right up the alley of anyone who is into ballistic electro punk / noisy shit / aggrotek. There’s also a bunch of synth sounds on it - which is handy for anyone who likes softsynths.

…but this puppy SCREAMS when you patch it through the modular synth…myha ha ha….
It’s sounds are very high quality with a solid spectrum, so there’s so much for an analogue filter to grab onto.

I found that it really rocks when it’s patched through the A-137 (Wave Shaper) and the A-102 Diode Filter.

Try this:
Use one of the standard analogue drum samples. Route it through a distortion unit to DESTROY it, then route it through the filter. Give the filter a snappy kick drum shaped envelope.
The result will harm small fluffy raver kiddies.

What are the most important skills for making industrial/electronic music?

I was asked this question by the awesome PIG from our forum. His original question is here:
http://krankhaus.net/forum/index.php?action=post;topic=13612.0

PIG’s question:
“A question for Zoog/DestroyX: what are the most important skills for making industrial/electronic music? I’m saving up for a synth, and I’m already a somewhat decent guitar player (although nothing special). What makes a good ’synthist’? Is it being a skilled with a keyboard, or is it having a good understanding of the technical side of things?”

Being able to play an instrument is important…but being open to making mistakes is a good skill to have. Some of our best songs are the result of “happy mistakes”.
…so being crap at an instrument can also be handy!

Some knowledge of music theory is also helpful. It’s good to know why and idea sounds good, and then to have the knowledge to make it sound better. It’s also extremely helpful to know why an idea sounds not-so-good…and knowing how you can fix it.
…but some of the greatest music was written by people who have no idea about music.

I think a very important skill to have is sound design - especially with Industrial Music. Unique sounds are very important. You don’t need a huge Doepfer modular synth or wall of Marshalls to achieve this. Use what you have. Whatever your synthesis style: Sampling, FM, AM, Phase Modulation, Subtractive, Additive, Z-plane, Granular, Strong…whatever it is, just throw yourself into it and enjoy it. You can do so much of this cheaply with softsynths.

Finally, I can not stress enough: The most important skill is the ability to recognise a good idea and flesh it out into a good song. A good song (regardless of the genre) is based on a good idea! All the production skills, amazing drums and awesome production will not make a crap idea sound amazing. There is an old industry saying: “you can’t polish a turd”

So to answer your question, get some softsynths and decide which you like most. If you like regular synthesis, there’s a thousand new synths that will do everything. If you like modular, get a Doepfer Dark Energy.

Please keep in mind that I love hardware…I’m not a big fan of softsynths. Please remember that some of the most amazing music produced over the last 5 years has been made with softsynths…so play around and ask as many people as you can. Our forum is full of very talented musicians - I’m sure they’ll have some great advice.

I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on this. Your opinion is welcome here!
