Bass+Synth+Chaos = MUD…??!!

Bass+Synth+Chaos = MUD…??!!

A question from our Forum:
I’ve got an insane drum loop and bass synth line happening. Distortion and all the bells and whistles but it’s really complex and loud and I can’t hear anything else in the mix and the bass and subs sound like mud…help!!

Thanks for this, here’s a few suggestions:

If you can, take out everything in the loop under 120Hz…an i mean use a brutal hi pass. make sure the only think under 120 is your kick and bass. When you master it, it will THUMP.

If you want the bass synth to be supremely HELLISH, only use a single oscillator. A single oscillator will cut through more than a huge stacked bass sound – it’s fat and wonderfully defined.

Also cut -12dB out of the loops around 600 (depended on taste). this frees up space for guitars and voxes. You could also cut -12 around 2.8kHz…this makes space for the hats and “air”

Hope this helps!

Question for Zoog: An Interest In Music

An Interest In Music

Original Post: http://krankhaus.net/forum/index.php?topic=10078.0

Ganguro666 from Angelspit’s Forum asked me about STUFF…here’s my response.

I have a great interest in music and lately I find myself with a great desire to create it, explore it, and then fuck it up. The only problem is that I don’t really think I have much talent in the way of music, I don’t know any instruments or anything like that but I do love to sing (even if I’m probably not very good) and write poems/lyrics.
Even if I don’t posses an ounce of musical talent, do you have any suggestions of some ways that I can be involved in making music?

I have a friend who also claims to have “no musical talent”…but his left foot is PURE GENIUS.

He has this amazing ability to come up with this very simple and effective rhythms by just tapping his left foot.
…I kid you not! This is his knack:
1) listen to a beat or a musical idea
2) tap your left foot (only works with his left foot…his right foot has no talent)
3) assign notes to the rhythm from his foot. Use octaves or the minor pentatonic scale (the black notes) it will work miracles.

Record your lyrics, decide on a tempo, slot them into a verse/chorus structure then apply the LEFT FOOT MAJIK.
Ever thought of learning the guitar? – it’s awesome therapy. Strum along using the rhythm from your left foot.

Another option: you might be an awesome lyricist/vocalist – ever thought of teaming up with a music writer?
I know several music makers who are looking for lyricists!! check our forum:

Most important: GOOD GEAR DOES NOT NESSISARILY MAKE GOOD MUSIC
Good music comes from good ideas…and it can be made with cheap shitty gear. Many people fall into the trap of thinking “if i just got one more synth I can make this happen”. This is just procrastinating.

making music is FUN – inventiveness is the key.

I hope this helps!

BLURB:
I bought this from a guy in Sydney around 2000. He also had an OB-Xa…but he refused to sell it. He used these two delicious machines in a cover band…yup, A COVER BAND. This FOOL put gaffer tape on this beautiful machine. He left it on there for several years. The gaffer tape is now baked on. One day i will find him. He will die a HORRIBLE DEATH.

STUDIO SNAPSHOT : Doepfer A-136 Distortion

Brand: Doepfer
Model: A-136 Distortion/Wave Multiplier
Link: http://www.doepfer.de/A136.htm

BLURB:
Similar to the A-137 Wave Shaper…but totally different. Personally I actually think the A-137 is a better distortion unit, but the A-136 is the master of Wave Shaping.

PROS:
The CV inputs can be used to get some very interesting “Morphing” happening. The sound can be radically changed with a twist of a knob.

ANGELSPIT Blipvert in The Dose about Modular Synthesizers

Cleanliness is next to Godliness, but the Devil’s gift is distortion…and Satan uses a Modular Synth!

Tired of your synth sounds? sick of softsynths? In the mood for a change?
To go modular or not to go modular…that is the question.

Firstly, it is extremely important that you understand the signal flow and basic building blocks of synthesis.
Secondly, ask yourself why you want to get into modulars. If you enjoy the art of tinkering with sound and creating complex sounds then you’re going to get hooked on modulars. But if you only use presets and slightly tweek the sounds I would suggest you experiment with a softsynth modular before forking out thousands on a modular that you might not utilise.
