ANGELSPIT Interview in Dark Spy, Issue 24
Interview by Katharina

Where and when did you two meet the first time?

ZooG: We met through a mutual love of zines in September 2002.

When did you decide to work together artistically? Is there a particular event you can remember?

ZooG: Almost immediately. Destroyx ran a zine distro called Vox Populis. She was overwhelmed with work because it was growing so fast. I offered to help her within 10 minutes of meeting her. So we started managing artistic and design orientated projects straight off. From there it went crazy – we made zines together, did photography – music was the next logical step.

Destroyx: I’ve always been a super creative person and so is ZooG. As soon as we met it seemed destined that we would be creating things together and I’m very happy that it’s been such a long creative partnership.

"Realise you are more than the label or genre you masquerade under."

Angelspit is more than music. You are very active in many varieties of art. What's the speciality of working like this?

ZooG: Angelspit is like a being. It has a look, a sound, an opinion, an attitude. It is not a 2 dimensional band. It is a reflection of us – our thoughts about the world and how we deal it it.

Destroyx: I think we are lucky that we have a lot of different specialties because it makes Angelspit a very unique entity. I have a design background and that really helps with the visual side of Angelspit because it comes naturally to me that the visuals are just as important as the music. The other cool thing is that we are perfectly happy working on music or art and it gives us a lot of variety and doesn’t make us bored with any one thing.

Often you define yourself as cyber punks and on your website there are some posibilities for the fans to create their own Angelspit-stuff. Is this connected to a Do-it-yourself mentality, we could find in the punk scene?

ZooG: DEFINITELY! We encourage people to get active and create! We have music loops, stencils, graphics and zines which we welcome people to utilise – we want people to learn from our stuff and make their own – to “find themselves” artistically. this is why we made the blipverts, so many people asked us about music, fashion and hair that we decided to start sharing all we know about it.

We are all becoming too passive. If we are not flicking through TV channels looking for entertainment, then we are numbing our minds on the web.

Destroyx: Most definitely. The DIY attitude is one that I find very important and I really value it. It’s something I want to encourage with our fans, because I know that a lot of people don’t have enough money to buy our merchandise, so we give them the opportunity to make their own. It’s actually been really great because it has encouraged a lot of creativity in our fans, which is just incredibly inspiring for me as an artist.

Your music often describes the destroying abilities of the human nature. Where, do you think, could be found the positive potential of this human nature?

ZooG: Through creativity. Realise you are more than the label or genre you masquerade under.

Destroyx: Yeah, I really have to agree with that too. I think that the best part of human nature is shown through creativity, in whatever form that takes- music, writing, art, being compassionate...elevating yourself out of your mundane existence into leading a life truly awake.

What's real beauty for you and what differs this one from the beauty-conception of todays modern society?

ZooG: People who push the boundaries. People who take pride in who they are and how they look regardless of if they are a size 6 or 16 - 21 years old or 51 years old.

Destroyx: Definitely people that feel comfortable being themselves. Real beauty for me is someone who feels confident with who they are and creates an image for themselves that comes truly from themselves and is original. I don’t think real beauty is a homogenized standard that everyone needs to adhere to. People come in all shapes and sizes and this difference is something we should celebrate not try to hide. I think that even in the alternative scene we need to celebrate more different types of beauty!

What's the most important thing to you, except for the art?

ZooG: Building and inspiring our community – dark alternative, Gothic, Fetish… call it what zou want, this is our community.

Destroyx: That’s a tough question, because I truly think that my life purpose is to make art! I think that expressing oneself with passion and beauty is honestly the most important thing to me. Other than art, I think that it’s important to take care of your local community as a whole, and that also means taking care of the environment. I’ve been doing a lot of research into climate change and I’ve begun to realise that we live in a global community, not competing countries. I think we need to realise that in developed nations (such as Australia, USA and Europe), our excessive consumption and use of the natural resources of developed nations is harming their way of life. I guess in general I’ve been thinking about my role in society as an individual and as a consumer in the grand scheme of the world.

Your releases in the past were alwas very good stuff! Now your new album Blood Death Ivory will be released this June. What could the listeners expect this time?

ZooG: We decided not to give a fuck…everybody was expecting something from us because of the success of Krankhaus, and we refused to let it get in the way of our creative process.
We wanted to make something that reflected our experience at that time – living in glorious Berlin, being surrounded by so many amazing cultures and languages of Europe.
musically, we were more inspired by the new electro…and applying our punk attitude.

Destroyx: I think listeners will be pleasantly surprised with the quality of the songs on this album. We’ve also experimented deeply with making some really fat bass sounds and programming some great synth parts and drums. Also, we worked even harder on our lyrics and vocals and I think our listeners can expect a something even more special than Krankhaus.

Was there any special reason or influence for the title of the new album?

ZooG: “Blood”, “Death” and “Ivory” are 3 very special words – each has a lot of meaning and assumed meaning…as if they have an ulterior motive.
The theme of the album is deceit, manipulation and power play. it is about twisting, corrupting and destroying a kingdom….but more on that later…

Destroyx: I was writing a short book early 2007 and I was working with the title “blood death ivory” because they symbolised different stages of human life. We developed the concept more through the lyrics and we’ll be revealing more about that with some more visual material in a few months.

Visually though, I was working with the idea of “cyber punk baroque” and if you look at the artwork we are trying to push a vicious yet elegant aesthetic. We designed all of the clothing, hair and hats and I think it’s quite unique and different.

Also in June you will be on tour together with the japanese formation Baal. Are their special connections between Angelspit and Baal?

ZooG: We are big fans of Baal and we love the way Baal push the boundaries of music – their music is so wonderfully vicious. Baal played several gigs in Europe last year and left such a great impression – we wanted to invite them to Australia, we know Australians will LOVE them.

Destroyx: They are definitely one of the closest bands to Angelspit’s sound. They are one of my favourite bands and they are fantastic live so we couldn’t resist the urge to bring them on tour with us. We love working with bands whose music is just as intense as us because our sounds compliment each other and the audience enjoy it more. Hopefully we can bring them to Europe...who knows?

Are there some dreams you have for the future?

ZooG: Most importantly we want to get back to Europe and the USA. We also want to remix Blood Death Ivory – musically, graphically and conceptually. A traditional remix album is happening, but we also want to expand on the images and concept. There is a very important message in this album – and we want other artists to have input into it.

Destroyx: I would love to do more international touring. I hope we can come back too Europe late 2008. We had such a fantastic response last time we toured there and we just want to come back. I am working on some exciting publishing projects that I can’t talk about right now, but I’m sure our fans will be excited by the prospect. I also want to do more photoshoots and design more clothing, which is probably one of my favourite things to do!

Perhaps you want to tell something special to our readers?

Destroyx: I would like to tell them that I think it’s important that people listen to themselves and follow their dreams. The success of Angelspit has only occurred due to our perseverance and willingness to take a chance. I hope that our new album will inspire people to become creative!
